Aaron Rai Secures Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship in Dramatic Play-Off Battle Versus Fellow Englishman Fleetwood

The 30-year-old golfer displayed exceptional composure to claim the prestigious Abu Dhabi title on Sunday, beating his compatriot in a tense playoff after a rollercoaster final round of competition.

Rai sank a decisive birdie putt from just over eight foot to seal the win, repeating his sole prior Rolex Series success at the Scottish Open in 2020, which was also a playoff win over Fleetwood.

Sunday's Play Excitement

The champion entered the final round with a one-shot advantage over fellow Englishman Tommy Fleetwood and Danish golfer Nicolai Højgaard. He ended up with a overall score of 263 after a topsy-turvy, five-under final round that included seven birdie putts and two bogeys.

Fleetwood moved one shot ahead with two holes to play after a birdie putt on the sixteenth, but Rai tied it up again on the seventeenth and then missed a 10-foot birdie putt to win outright on the last green.

Play-Off Decider

This led to a play-off at the Yas Links course where Rai prevailed to claim the title and $1.5 million (£1.13 million) in prize money.

{“Tommy is a phenomenal golfer and an even more person. To play with him the final two rounds was really special,” stated the winner, the present world No 30. “You’re so focused on playing the round and staying in the zone, it’s hard to describe at the present how it feels. It is incredible to be stood here.”

Other Contenders

The Northern Irish star found himself a bit too far to make up, coming up one shot short in a shared third place with Højgaard, after a spectacular 62 final round of ten-under. It was his best-ever score on the European Tour, including eight birdie putts and one eagle.

The Danish golfer fired six birdie putts of his as well, but his hopes of leading the standings were dented by a dropped shot on the 12th. England’s Richard Mansell produced an superb final-round seven-under to end up tied for fifth with Australian Daniel Hillier.
