On the eve of his six-year milestone as manager, Mikel Arteta has stated plainly that his longevity in North London is fundamentally dependent to winning major honors.

Reflecting on: Six Years in Charge

Arteta assumed control on 20 December 2019 and soon guided the team to an FA Cup victory not long after. However, that initial silverware remains his sole major honor since succeeding Unai Emery.

“Absolutely,” the manager said upon being asked about his future past 2027. “But it’s about today. And many things have to happen in the near future as well to deserve that opportunity.”

He will mark the anniversary with a fixture against Everton, the identical team Arsenal faced the day after his hiring was confirmed.

The Current Landscape

With second-placed Manchester City set to face West Ham earlier in the day, Arsenal could be displaced top spot in the Premier League before their own match begins. This potential shift notwithstanding Arteta managing a squad that has suffered over 100 injuries since the start of last season.

He currently has a year and a half left on the deal he signed in 2024, however, he knows that he must deliver sooner rather than later.

The Manager's Mandate

The manager expanded, stressing the constant necessity to prove his worth. “I think a manager must deserve the right to be here tomorrow. And that depends on how you react, how you communicate, how you step into the dressing room, the instructions you give.”

He added, commending the consistent faith from the hierarchy, while singling out the players' commitment as most crucial. “Ultimately, the most important ones are those players... For six years, I’ve seen just players with a degree of commitment, desire to learn and give the maximum to the team.”

Injury Concerns

The squad faces the Everton match dealing with yet another injury. Defender Ben White has been ruled out with a hamstring injury that is likely to keep him out for a few weeks.

Evolved Priorities

Despite the availability issues and the immense scrutiny, Arteta is confident the club's “objectives and communication” are completely changed from when he first arrived.

Arteta highlighted the record-breaking achievements as proof they are close. “Examine the performances, all the records that we... were breaking... We still haven't been able to do that [win trophies]. But that shows the standard we operate at.”

Arteta concluded, “This is a standard that the Premier League has not witnessed in the past. And our aim is to achieve more lofty ambitions. And if we do that, I think we are on the correct trajectory to winning.”
