A bulky Pacific bluefin tuna created waves at the Toyosu fish market this Monday, garnering a historic bid of 510.3 million yen ($3.2m; £2.4m) during the market's first auction of the year.

The successful offer for the 243kg fish was placed by the company of a well-known sushi restaurant group, which manages restaurants across the country and overseas.

"The first tuna brings a prosperous start," stated the business owner, a notable bidder at the yearly January sale.

Dubbed the Tuna King, this entrepreneur is renowned for submitting high bids for bluefin tuna at these symbolic January auctions.

Bidding Surprise and Historic Precedent

After the auction, the winner admitted to reporters that he was "taken aback at the final price," stating, "I believed we would be able to buy it a little for less, but the price skyrocketed in no time."

This most recent acquisition tops his previous notable purchases:

  • He secured a tuna for 56.5 million yen away in 2012.
  • He bid 155 million yen the following year.
  • In 2019, he acquired a tuna for 333.6 million yen ($2.1 million).

Even after once remarking that he thought he "did too much," he has now gone on to shatter his personal record yet again.

An Annual Spectacle of High Prices

The opening auction at the Tokyo fish market is notoriously known for exceptionally high prices. The previous year, the initial tuna was acquired for 207 million yen by another culinary group, which indicated the fish would be featured at its eateries throughout the country.

The high-energy atmosphere at the fish market during these pre-dawn auctions has transformed into a popular event in Tokyo. Monday's auction, which began around 05:00 local time, was no exception.

From Auction to Plate

The extremely valuable tuna was quickly sliced up for customers at the entrepreneur's sushi restaurants soon after the auction was finished.

"I feel like I've started the year in a good way after eating something so auspicious as the year begins," shared one happy patron.
