In her workspace, 27-year-old Neerma Devi slices through necklines and stitching, pulling sleeves off and inserting pieces of used clothes inside a loud device. Every slice releases an additional burst of particulate matter in the facility.

Large-Scale Recycling Operations

Panipat processes about 1 million tonnes of clothing discard annually through its numerous processing plants and laborers totaling no less than 300k workers, redirecting significant amounts of discarded textiles that would otherwise be disposed in dumps globally.

Deliveries arriving through western Indian ports are moved to the city, where the clothes are initially categorized: apparel pieces that remain usable are redirected to retail spaces, however the majority are cut up and reprocessed into thread.

Environmental Effects

The negative effects on people's health is also not limited to employees laboring inside facilities. In surrounding regions of the city, scores of bleaching units accommodate growing demand to treat fabric remnants prior to being cut up and transformed into fiber.

The city contains roughly 400 registered dyeing units and at least 200 more that function without authorization.
