The Fianna Fáil nominee Jim Gavin has announced he is pulling out from the race for Ireland's head of state right away.

He was poised to be a candidate among three standing for the role of Irish president, beside TD Catherine Connolly and Fine Gael candidate Heather Humphreys.

However, on Sunday evening he stated via a statement he had "made a mistake that was not in keeping with my character and the standards he upholds."

"Taking all these considerations on board, I have decided to exit the presidential race immediately and reunite with my loved ones," he stated in his announcement.
