Formula 1 racer Liam Lawson disclosed he barely escaped a life-threatening incident during Sunday's Mexico City Grand Prix when a pair of track officials darted across the track directly in front of him

The concerning event happened on the third lap when safety workers were spotted on the circuit as Lawson was returning to the race following an premature pit stop to swap his broken nose section

Racer's Instant Response

Moments later, Racing Bulls driver Lawson communicated to his race engineer saying: "You've got to be joking? Did you witness that? I might have... taken their lives"

"I honestly couldn't believe what I was seeing"

"I rejoined with a new set of hards, and then I approached Turn One and there were just two individuals dashing across the track"

"I nearly hit one of them, truthfully, it was incredibly risky"

Track Safety Questioned

"Obviously there's been a communication breakdown at some point but I've never experienced that before, and I haven't really seen that in the past. It's completely unacceptable"

"We cannot comprehend how on a ongoing race track marshals can be allowed to just run across the track in such a way. I'm clueless about the cause, I'm sure we'll get some form of reasoning, but this absolutely cannot recur"

Governing Body Reviewing

F1's overseeing organization, the International Automobile Federation (FIA), is thoroughly reviewing the circumstances

"Subsequent to a first corner event, the race directors was notified that debris was present on the track at the critical section of that bend" commented the regulatory authority

"In the third rotation, marshals were notified and put on alert to go onto the racing surface and recover the debris once all cars had passed"

"As soon as it became apparent that Lawson had pitted, the directives to deploy officials were withdrawn and a double yellow flag was displayed in that area"

"We are still investigating what occurred after that point"
