The Tottenham defender scored on two occasions as Spurs extended their winning streak on the road in the top division and handed the Toffees their initial loss at their new home.

The Toffees were unbeaten in their five previous fixtures at their new ground at Bramley-Moore Dock, having departed their historic home behind after more than a century at the conclusion of the previous campaign.

But Spurs captain Van de Ven pounced twice from corners in the first half to put their impressive record at risk, and they were failed to turn it around before the midfielder - assisted by former Toffees attacker the Brazilian - nodded in a third to seal the victory.

The Everton defender believed he had levelled the scores a short while after the defender's first goal, glancing a bullet header past the Spurs keeper from an set-piece.

The Portuguese striker, meanwhile, missed a number of chances, while Vicario made a succession of excellent stops to guarantee Tottenham went five away games unbeaten in the Premier League.

But the VAR intervened, instructing the match official to check the goal on the screen and the official ruled that the winger and the attacker were in an illegal position and had interfered with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

The win elevates Thomas Frank's side up to third in the Premier League, five points off local foes and leaders the Gunners.

The Merseyside club stay in 14th position and sit six points clear of the relegation zone.

Spurs breakdown: The defender fulfils duties at each end of pitch

Following a drab midweek performance in the Champions League against Monaco, where they mustered a mere attempts on goal, the manager chose the French striker up front instead of ex-Everton forward the Brazilian.

The new arrival was failed to influence the game before being replaced for the substitute after 60 minutes on the pitch, but it emerged he wasn't needed in the end.

Defender the Dutchman transformed into an offensive threat to be feared.

Tottenham's first goal came from a well-worked corner routine, with Rodrigo Bentancur directing the ball toward the face of goal for an unmarked Van de Ven to score.

And the captain - filling in as captain in the Argentine's unavailability - added his next goal in first-half stoppage time as he rose above Jordan Pickford to nod in.

Van de Ven was equally outstanding in defence, combining well with his defensive colleague as the pair dealt excellently with the 34 crosses sent their way by the opposition.

Toffees breakdown: Toffees missing finishing touch

Everton's recent stadium had been a happy hunting ground, but it seems the freshness may have worn off somewhat and fans flocked to the gates after Sarr's final goal for Tottenham.

The end in Everton's winning streak at home won't be a major worry for David Moyes, but their attacking woes are.

Beto and Thierno Barry - the Toffees' pair of established centre-forwards - had netted just one league goal combined before the weekend's outing.

And they were unable to contribute to that miserable tally on a damp and dreary evening on in Liverpool.

Beto's performance was epitomized when he chose to bicycle-kick a golden opportunity from close range, despite having space and time to readjust for a simpler attempt that would have tested the keeper.

Barry, too, failed to influence the game after coming on for Beto in the second half.

It wasn't for a lack of opportunity. Most of the home side's attacks came through Grealish and Ndiaye, who tirelessly delivered dangerous crosses into the Spurs box.
