Mount Everest Rescue In Progress as Snowstorm Traps Nearly 1,000 People
Emergency efforts are ongoing on Mount Everest following a severe snowstorm that left close to a thousand people trapped at campsites on the east face of the peak.
Several Hundred Rescued Successfully Amid Heavy Precipitation
Numerous hikers cut off by the blizzard near the eastern face of the peak were safely guided by rescue teams on the weekend, as exceptional precipitation hit the Himalayan region.
As of Sunday, three hundred and fifty individuals had arrived at the small township of Qudang, while communication had been made with the other two hundred hikers.
Peak Season Contributed to High Visitor Numbers
Visitors to the remote valley of Karma, which leads to the eastern Kangshung face of Everest, totaled several hundred this week, benefiting from an extended holiday break in the region.
Heavy snow in the valley, which sits at an average altitude of 4,200 meters (over 13,700 feet), started late Friday and persisted throughout Saturday.
Continued Operations to Rescue Others to Security
The remaining trekkers are expected to arrive the safe zone in stages under the guidance and assistance of emergency teams organised by the local government.
Many residents and rescue teams have been deployed to help clear pathways obstructing routes to the region.
Unclear Details Over Support Staff and Other Areas
Reports indicated that nearly 1,000 people had been stranded. It was not specified whether local guides and team members with the hiking groups had been located.
It was also unclear if hikers near the northern side of Everest—also in the region—had been impacted or not.
Tourist Rush and Entry Halted
The north face of Everest, due to its easy access by paved road, often attracts many of tourists. This month is a peak season, when skies clear with the conclusion of the monsoon season.
Admission tickets and access to the whole Mount Everest region were halted from the weekend, according to announcements posted on official channels.
Nearby Area Affected by Severe Weather
To the southern side of the region, heavy rains triggered landslides and sudden flooding that have blocked roads, destroyed bridges, and killed at least 47 people since last week.
Thirty-five individuals died in multiple mudslides in the eastern Ilam district bordering India. Nine individuals were reported missing after being carried off by rising waters, and three more were fatally struck in lightning strikes in other parts of the nation.
