Teenager Discovered Dead After Untrue Accusations of Taking Cremated Remains
A 14-year-old youth was found dead just days after being falsely blamed of stealing the ashes of a dead infant during a break-in, a coroner's inquiry has learned.
Tragic Finding
The young boy's mother and father found his remains in his room at his Flintshire home on 19 November 2021.
Untrue Allegations Start
The investigation learned how his parent got a communication on November 8th, 2021 via online platforms, from a individual asking if her son was her child. The message added: "Tell him appreciation for burgling my flat."
In a statement presented to the court, Lisa Lloyd said the individual had been in the media, asserting her baby's remains had been taken in a break-in - a allegation which was false.
Law Enforcement Investigation
An official inquiry from authorities later concluded the supposed burglary complainant had "lied to police" and "evidence shows that the property was not taken in the beginning".
News coverage about the alleged stolen remains attracted online comments, and although the teenager was not named in the posts, his mother said people "understood it was him".
The "social media content were really upsetting", she stated.
Emotional Wellbeing Impact
She added that her son had been identified with moderate ADHD, and as part of that disorder, other peoples' opinions genuinely were important to him.
"This must have hurt him deeply," she commented, "especially when this was untrue".
The teenager was arrested at home, but no evidence was discovered. He was transported to a police station and later released under investigation.
Police said they would be in contact, the inquest heard, but had not contacted the relatives by the moment of his death.
Withdrawal and Worry
His mother said Kai "withdrew into himself" after the detention and "would keep asking me whether I had received anything from the police", because his condition meant sometimes "certain periods could seem like much longer".
When she talked to him about the supposed incident, she said her son informed her he had entered the house because the woman who resided there had said he could utilize the bathroom anytime he needed, but denied taking anything.
Digital Bullying
In a combined testimony between her and her spouse, Mrs Lloyd said her son was being bullied digitally after the allegations.
The inquest learned that one young adult urged Kai to end his life.
She had no concerns on the evening before he died, explaining how she had heard him "laughing and joking".
She portrayed him as a "compassionate, loving" boy, and said her "relatives is totally devastated".
He had been "clearly hiding his concerns", she said, adding that he could not bear to have anyone "have negative thoughts of him".
Educational Response
The inquest received testimony from educational staff at the local secondary school.
On 8 November, she "overheard some students discussing that Kai had been arrested and that was the first I learned".
"He told me... he'd was innocent," she added.
After the discussion, the educator said she called the family's parents' landline and provided a voicemail saying she had communicated to the student about the allegations.
The proceedings learned his family said they did not receive that communication.
Formal Finding
Senior coroner informed the hearing he would await reports regarding what enhancements had been made to handling suspects with ADHD, before deciding whether he should make a avoidance of subsequent deaths report.
Providing a descriptive conclusion, he stated: "Around 8 November 2021, unsupported accusations were made against the teenager, a young individual.
"Probably falsehoods were subsequently exaggerated and exaggerated through the platform of online networks.
"On November 11th, he was interviewed by the police and following his questioning he was released while inquiries proceeded."
The coroner determined: "Exists no evidence that the actions or omissions of any agency caused or added to his death and although it was the result of a self-inflicted act it is impossible to discern his intent."
