The Azerbaijani side Writes History with Stunning Triumph Over Benfica

Qarabag players celebrating historic win

A team representing Azerbaijan had never claimed victory in the UEFA’s elite competition prior to Qarabag's memorable performance against Benfica.

The visitors executed a remarkable comeback against Benfica to create history and emerge as the pioneering Azerbaijani team to triumph in a UEFA Champions League group stage fixture.

Having qualified for the continent’s top club tournament for the initial occasion in almost a decade, the team managed by Gurbanov found themselves facing a 2-0 deficit after just 16 minutes following goals from Enzo Barrenechea and Vangelis Pavlidis.

The Azerbaijan champions reduced the lead on the half-hour mark through a superb Leandro Andrade finish before colleague Kady Borges rattled the base of the post.

Three minutes after the interval, the Azerbaijani visitors shut up the home stadium with the leveller. Marko Jankovic's defence-splitting pass found Camilo Duran and he brilliantly found the far post on his first UCL appearance.

Substitute Oleksii Kashchuk got the landmark match-winner late from time, picking the ball up with his back facing the net before converting brilliantly on the turn.

Qarabag players and staff celebrated emotionally in celebration at the end of the match after a win that will be remembered in UCL folklore, with their previous campaign concluding with a pair of ties and losses.

Up next for Gurbanov and his team is a fixture at their own stadium with Copenhagen, while Benfica make the journey to Chelsea.
