The Details Known Regarding the Victims of the Bondi Shooting

At least 16 individuals lost their lives and in excess of 40 sustained injuries when gunmen opened fire at a Hanukkah gathering at Bondi Beach, an attack Australian police have labeled a terrorist attack.

In the latest update, officials have stated the number of fatalities remains at 16, which includes one of the alleged attackers. Additionally, 42 injured people were transported to the hospital.

The victims are yet to be officially identified, but authorities state their ages are between 10 and 87 years of age.

Here are the victims who are known so far.

Eli Schlanger

London-born rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.

Described as a father of five children, he was the assistant rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Relatives and acquaintances remembered him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very warm outgoing person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How can a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, have his life ended in this way?” a family member said.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the arrival of their youngest child in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, as stated by his wife.

She described the moments leading up to the attack, saying they had been standing together when the gunfire started. “He moved to protect me because he wished to be near me,” she stated.

The husband and wife were both Holocaust survivors, having endured unspeakable terror in their youth. They had later moved to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

French foreign ministry have confirmed that French national Dan Elkayam is among the dead.

In a statement, the Foreign Minister declared that France shared the grief of his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This despicable act is a new, tragic manifestation of a revolting outpouring of antisemitic hatred that we must put a stop to,” the message continued.

One Child

A child who was taken to the a children's hospital succumbed to her injuries, according to police reports.

One Israeli Citizen

One victim from Israel was among those killed in the incident, according to multiple sources citing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people transported to hospitals, a significant number remain receiving treatment, with five in a critical state. The injured include two officers who attended the scene.

A casualty is a bystander who rushed to the scene to tackle one of the gunmen. Hailed as a hero, he received gunshot wounds but is recovering well in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. Sources state he was hurt and is receiving treatment in hospital.

He wrote, he recounted the incident as an “utter carnage,” but also praised the actions of those who rushed to help. He stated he felt it was a “miracle” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was also injured in the shooting. He told reporters he listened to “a large number” of gunshots.

“I thought it was rubber bullets, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I sustained a gunshot wound. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
