The fast bowler Poised for a Major Role in the Ashes

Australian cricket captain

The Australian skipper has taken over 300 dismissals in 71 appearances with an impressive average.

Australia's chair of selectors Bailey has stated that skipper Cummins will play a "major part" in this winter's England-Australia contest.

There were concerns that the 32-year-old might sit out due to a persistent back stress problem that was still troubling him.

Previous updates from the squad suggested no final decision had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the Test matches scheduled to begin on 21 November in Perth.

Bailey expressed that his recovery is on track and felt positive about the prospects of participating.

"We know that the window is narrowing and there are permutations around that, not just the back issue, but additional elements," he commented.

"The outlook is good. There's strong faith that he'll participate in a key capacity. With luck it's the first Test. Otherwise, we'll adjust."

Injury History

The captain missed the white-ball matches against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals last month after medical tests showed a stress reaction in his back.

Previous incidents include of spinal problems, with recurrences in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 leading to absences from multiple domestic campaigns in a short span.

He emphasized he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his rehabilitation process to secure his spot for the Ashes.

He mentioned that he did not know if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his recovery but acknowledged it was "pressing" for him to be fit for the opener.

Backup Options

Should Cummins not be fit, former captain Steve Smith will lead the side.

Versatile player Green was withdrawn recently from the ODI lineup for their one-day international series against the subcontinent side as a precautionary measure because of soreness in his side.

He labeled it as a "minor" injury and stated that Green will play in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "well-prepared to be ready to bowl."

"Extensive planning has gone into creating the schedule for him to take part for the initial game as an dual-role player," the selector detailed.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the starting games anyway. The way he swings the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, if it causes any delay for a short period, we opted to adopt a safer strategy."
