Heads Up: This discussion contains major spoilers for the second part of the final season.
A Journey Into the Tunnel
After locating Max in the mental landscape dubbed Camazotz, Max reveals she is sheltering in a chamber that Henry is terrified of. By leaving the lens cap on a telescope taken from Henry's old home allows Holly to realize that the danger lies beyond the cave. When she lines up her view to the cut-out, she and Max suddenly fall into a subterranean passage.
There, they witness a young, eight-year-old Henry encounter an man who is hurt and scared. Attempting assistance, the man panics and shoots, hitting him in the hand. To protect himself, Henry strikes the man down with a rock. "Was this the turning point?" Holly questions through tears. Essentially, yes, but the act wasn't just a fight for life.
Similar to other plot points this season, the full story behind the mine shaft incident was first explored the stage play the prequel play.
A Naval Mystery and A Spy's Mission
The play reveals the legendary naval test, which reportedly teleported a vessel into a dimension known as the Abyss. Demogorgons assaulted it, and the lone returnee was the ship's commander, who emerged in a unresponsive state with an altered blood type.
That survivor's offspring, the future Dr. Brenner, attempted to recreate this dimensional breach in Nevada. One of his scientists pilfered lab samples to sell to the Soviets, who were eager to begin their version of the tests. The man in the cavern is that employee.
So, What's in the Case?
Considering what is understood of his research, the container almost certainly contained samples of Captain Brenner's infected blood. In the scene, Henry is wounded and bleeding. It's probable he was infected upon handling the contents, leading to the awakening of his powers—traits he would inadvertently transfer to the kids under Brenner's care.
Alternatively, the container could have held dark matter that eventually found its way to the Hawkins lab, where it maintains the stability of the mirror dimension. The stage play explains that Henry somehow wound up in the Abyss, returning after half a day as a different person. As a youth, he battles the influence of a dark entity, similar to how Will was possessed by the entity in the past.
Confronting Terror
His lasting fear of that cave shows how utterly horrifying the event was for him. While he controls the army of monsters and works to collapse the Abyss into Hawkins, a piece of the scared boy still exists. Vecna uses fear, and the series is building toward a climactic battle between him and Will, who has overcome his personal demons to fortify himself.
His confrontation has effectively disarmed Vecna. More importantly, Will now understands what his enemy truly fears, and this may grant a critical advantage in the ultimate battle that awaits.
