The Young Spinner Makes Surprise Inclusion in English Test Series Squad

England have opted for a 12-man squad just two days ahead of the opening Test match, with Shoaib Bashir securing a surprise spot.

The 22-year-old’s inclusion suggests that the tourists will delay until the day of the initial match to determine whether the venue pitch favor four seamers or the inclusion of a spin bowler.

Jofra Archer and Mark Wood are included in the selected squad, showing there are no concerns about their pace bowler’s fitness.

Gus Atkinson and Brydon Carse round out the bowling group, with Carse most likely to be omitted if the spinner makes the starting XI.

Ground Conditions Favor Seamers

Brendon McCullum had been expected to choose an all-seam attack on a venue that has hosted several past matches.

In those games, 134 wickets have been taken by pace bowling, with only 40 to spin.

Among these 40 wickets, the veteran spinner has claimed 29, while overseas slow bowlers combined have just a handful.

At a venue renowned for its speed and carry, and whose curator, the pitch preparer, pledged that these characteristics are “a mainstay and not going to change,” a side loaded with seamers is still the more likely decision.

Alternative Choices Considered

Previously there was rumors that Will Jacks could be parachuted into the team to provide some slow bowling while additionally strengthening the lower order.

However McCullum has chosen to keep faith with the young spinner, having stated earlier this year that he would be his preferred slow bowler for the Ashes.

Earlier, Lyon described Bashir as “decent,” adding that “from my perspective, Jack Leach is still England’s top slow bowler.”

“It is a huge responsibility, and it can be a massive challenge for people who lack experience in the past in these conditions,” Lyon remarked of slow bowling in Australian Tests.

“I won't reveal my strategies so opponents perform and perform well out here.”
