UN Ends Penalties on Syria's Leader Ahead of White House Visit
United Nations Security Council members approved to a United States-backed measure removing restrictions on Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa ahead of his presidential meeting next week.
Sharaa was named transitional president after leading a rebel offensive that ousted the previous leader in the final month of 2024, bringing to a close thirteen long years of internal conflict.
Washington's ambassador UN ambassador Mike Waltz declared the global body transmitted "a strong political signal" that acknowledged Syria entered "a new era" after Assad's removal.
He had been subject to UN sanctions while commanding the Muslim faction Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), once connected to the terrorist network. America delisted the organization from the catalog of global extremist entities in July.
Further Restrictions Lifted
The UN also removed penalties against the Syrian interior official the interior minister.
The nation's top diplomat welcomed the removal of the sanctions, declaring through digital channels: "Syrian officials convey thanks to Washington and allied countries for their support the Syrian nation and citizens."
Forthcoming Presidential Visit
President Sharaa's presidential meeting this coming Monday occurs subsequent to American leader Donald Trump remarked that Sharaa demonstrated "substantial headway" in establishing peace to the previously divided state.
Both presidents held discussions on their first occasion during May, while the American president was in Saudi Arabia during a visit to the region.
Subsequent to that discussion, Trump portrayed Sharaa as a "tough guy" possessing a "powerful background".
His Islamist group HTS served as al-Qaeda's branch in Syria before he cut connections back in 2016.
Prior United States Journey
This week's diplomatic engagement will not be the president's debut journey to the United States during this period. In September, he became the initial Syrian president to speak before the global assembly in Manhattan after approximately sixty years.
During his address, he stated the country had been "reclaiming its rightful place across international circles" while showing support with the people of Gaza.
