Zverev Battles Auger-Aliassime in ATP Finals Showdown
Introduction
The inherent challenges of group stage tennis typically lead to at this point of the season-ending championships fans frequently find themselves scratching our heads, scrambling about for a calculator and trying to work out the mind-boggling permutations of qualification. However this evening's contest between Zverev and Felix Auger-Aliassime, mercifully, is easy. It’s a straight shootout: the successful player secures a semifinal battle against Carlos Alcaraz at this season-ending event; the loser is eliminated.
The German is the frontrunner for this: the third-ranked player is the more accomplished player, has previously won at this competition twice before and is ahead in their direct encounters six matches to three, winning both their previous matches on an enclosed hard court.
But … this is the surface on which Felix has secured the bulk of his trophies, he’s riding a high after his compelling comeback against Ben Shelton on midweek and he took out Zverev in the US Championships third round in August. Plus, the playing speed is higher in Turin than at Flushing Meadows, which provides an additional advantage in AA’s favour.
Should Zverev be cautious, like he was against the Italian, and Auger-Aliassime takes it to the German with his stinging serves and bold strategy, it might very well be the young Canadian – the former prodigy who was earlier slated in front of Alcaraz and Sinner to succeed the tennis icons – who earns the uncertain distinction of facing the global leader tomorrow.
The match starts: at about 8.30pm local time, 7:30 PM in the UK.
